Losing it

Weight, that is. Not the most romantic or touching subject ever but, like many brides, I'm trying to get 20 or so pounds down before the big day.

I recently made a trip to Urgent Care for a routine cold, and they did the dreadful weigh in. I took off my shoes, jacket, and belt (I'm not kidding) and the number on the electric scale was higher than it had ever been. I died a little on the inside and wanted to blame it on the holiday season over the last couple of months, but I know I need to hold myself accountable. Its time for a change.

In high school I was very athletic, danced and played sports on and off. I was a very healthy weight for my height (I'm 5'8") and was happy with the way I looked. Well, that was 2004, and this friends is 2009. Its been five years since I've taken a dance class or did pretty much anything that required any sort of physical ability. Now, to be totally honest, I'm lazy. I'd rather turn on Lost or The Bachelor when I get home and nuke a frozen dinner, then change clothes, grab a water bottle and head to the gym at my apartment complex.

So, how am I actually going to lose it? Well, I don't know. I'm really trying to get in my eight glasses of water a day, and when I do want soda I make sure that its diet and caffeine free (caffeine free is a personal choice, I'll get into in another post). I try to walk my dog for a little while longer than normal, but I really don't watch what what I eat and it totally kills me to get on a treadmill. I've taken the occasional yoga and Pilate's class, but never followed through (told you I was bad about finishing things) although those classes really made me feel better than I have in years.

The changes that I need to make are clear as day: Make healthy choices, eat more veggies, keep the carbs and protein in smaller portions, skip the soda and junk food, work out more (or at all), pick up the yoga mat and hit it again. I've also heard the 30 day Shred, a workout DVD with Jillian Michaels from the Biggest Loser, is kick ass. This all sounds easy enough right? Wrong. I believe the way I'm like this, I've said it before and I'll say it again, is because I'm lazy. But I also believe this is part mental. Its my inability to put down the snickers, and pick up the apple. Change the mindset, change the body.

So, along with my tedious work schedule, I'll be writing about my ongoing struggle with losing those first 20, and beyond.

Going now to fill up the water bottle.
